Mangeshkar Hospital to open cancer centre in Pune

Pune , June 23

THE Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital in Pune is all set to inaugurate a 40-bed specialty cancer therapy centre, which will offer patients the latest treatment available for the dreaded disease.

The centre, being set up at the cost of an estimated Rs 16 crore, will be inaugurated by Amitabh Bachchan on June 30 and will be open for patients from July 1.

The hospital's Medical Director, Dr Dhananjay Kelkar, told Business Line that the hospital will offer comprehensive treatment for cancer which is on the increase. While conventional radiation treatment leaves patients with an array of side-effects, the new centre will offer Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), which eliminates much of the side-effects related to it. The treatment is currently available only at The Tata Centre and the Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai, he added. The hospital will also offer bone marrow transplants, which is a therapy that is rarely undertaken even in larger centres like Mumbai and Delhi, Dr Kelkar said.

"While we have already been offering cancer surgery and chemotherapy as part of the hospital's services, the focus at the specialty centre will be only offering a comprehensive therapy for the disease,'' he added.

The 400-bed Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital is promoted by veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar's family in memory of her father and is largely set up by donors and patrons. While the hospital itself already has specialised cardiac neuro-surgery and transplant sections, the new centre will have a 40-member team of physicians, surgeons, oncologists and social workers.
