Climate & Weather Vigorous monsoon helps alter rainfall profile in Kerala Our Bureau
A VIGOROUSLY active southwest monsoon during the week ending June 22 ensured that all districts ended up with `excess' rainfall. Thrissur (+159 per cent), Ernakulam (+155), Kannur (+151), Idukki (+140) and Pathanamthitta (+131), in that order, lead the pack. This helped drastically alter the rainfall profile for the season starting June 1 (onset of monsoon was declared on June 5) up till June 22, with 12 districts recording `excess' or `normal' rainfall. Only Thiruvananthapuram (-20) and Wayanad (-22) had to contend with `deficient' rainfall. Those recording `excess' rainfall for the season are: Pathanamthitta (+37), Idukki (+23) and Ernakulam (+21). The rest returned `normal' rain figures. Chief amounts of rainfall in cm are (June 21 and 22): June 21: Vythiri - 19; Kannur - 16; Kochi Airport, Thalassery and Irikkur - 15 each; Thodupuzha, Koilandy and Karipur Airport - 13 each; Hosdurg - 12; Piravom, Kozhikode and Mananthavady - 11 each; Nilambur, Manjeri, Perinthalmanna, Mannarkad, Pattambi and Vadakkancherry- 10 each; Aluva, Paravur, Kudulu, Ottapalam, Alathur, Thrithala, Thrissur, Kodungallur, Chalakkudy and Kannara - 9 each; Alappuzha, Cochin International Airport, Vadakara, Parambikkulam, Irinjalakkuda, Kunnamkulam and Kuppady - 8 each; and Cherthala, Mancompu, Perumbavur, Munnar, Idukki, Kasaragod, Kollengode and Ambalavayal - 7 each. June 22: Hosdurg - 25; Kasaragod-19; Irikkur - 10; Kozhikode - 7; Karipur Airport - 6; Thodupuzha - 4; and Cochin International Airport, Perinthalmanna, Parambikkulam and Chalakkudy - 3 each. Mean relative humidity varied between 63 per cent and 98 per cent, mean could coverage between 5-8 okta and mean wind speed, 2-8 kmph. Forecast until the morning of June 25 spoke about the possibility of rain at many places in all districts in the State. Isolated heavy rain has been forecast for the 48 hours ending June 25. Outlook for the subsequent two days did not indicate any significant change in weather. Stage and state of crops: The Virippu paddy has reached the panicle initiation stage in the direct sown crop. New planting, intercultural operation, plant protection measures, harvesting and processing operations are being carried out in coconut and arecanut.
