Lanka keen to step up exports to India

Our Bureau

New Delhi , June 23

CHARGED with the political mandate to conclude a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with India by the year-end, high-level negotiators from Sri Lanka have launched a new round of technical-level discussions with Indian business and Government.

A 13-member Sri Lankan team led by the Director General, Commerce, Mr K.J. Weerasinghe, told Indian businessmen at a meeting organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry that asymmetries in trade persist even after adoption of the Indo-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement (ISFTA) in 1998.

He said although ISFTA had resulted in expansion of exports between the two countries, Sri Lanka's export to India was still limited to a few items.

He also said that the Sri Lankan Government had set up working groups to look into the entire gamut of issues, including trade in service. On services, Sri Lanka's strategy for liberalisation would factor in the asymmetries, go for progressive liberalisation and sequence the liberalisation process.
