According to an official release, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, gave this direction to engage the services of NISIET while reviewing the status of the SSI sector. As on March 31, 2004, a total of 1,43,867 units were registered in the State. Of this, 67,743 units are working. As many as 278 units were being considered for rehabilitation.

In 2004-05, a total of 1,632 units were registered.

The CM said through the survey an overall picture of SSIs, their problems in case a particular industry is closed and the chances of revival could be studied.

Dr Reddy permitted the Industries Department to approach the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission immediately, seeking reduction of interest rates on power arrears due by the sick units, which will facilitate their speedy revival.
