A fisherman handling small varieties at a pond on the outskirts of Kolkata. West Bengal is the top fish producer in the country for the last seven years and the Union Government has rewarded it with the best productivity award. Several steps have been taken by the State Government to make fisheries a success story. The State is able to cultivate fishes in every kind of water body i.e. brackish water, sweet water, sewage water and marine water. During 2003-04, West Bengal earned Rs 600 crore through export of 18,000 tonnes of fish.
