CWC concession draws exporters to NMPT

Mangalore , July 5

THE Central Warehousing Corporation's (CWC) decision to offer concession to importers and exporters for utilising the container freight station (CFS) in the New Mangalore Port (NMP) premises seems to have encouraged exporters in the hinterland. The Kodagu-based Shrisha Enterprises shipped five containers of copper cargo from the CFS to Slovenia on Tuesday.

The Chief Executive Officer of Shrisha Enterprises, Mr Shrinath, told Business Line that he was a little sceptical about sending containers from NMP. But the CWC decision to reduce container tariff by Rs 400 a container attracted him to divert his cargo to NMP. Mr Shrinath said that though his company is situated at Kushalnagar in Kodagu district, he was exporting containers through Chennai and Kochi ports. "The proximity of New Mangalore Port to the hinterland and cost factors attracted us to divert the cargo to Mangalore," he said.

The Chairman of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), Mr P. Tamilvanan, said that the container-handling charges were coming in the way of attracting container cargo to the port. Considering this, the NMPT had convened a meeting of port users and CWC representatives in Mangalore recently.

He said that the CWC regional manager, who attended the meeting, had agreed to offer certain concessions to the users following a request made by the NMPT in this regard. Consequently, the tariff was reduced. The other decisions included extension of paper lining facility at a minimum cost of Rs 600 a TEU (twenty-ft equivalent unit) and extension of fumigation facility for export consignments in the CFS at a cost of Rs 500 a TEU. The meeting also agreed to waive insurance charges of Rs 250 a box.

Mr Tamilvanan hoped that these efforts would help attract more container cargo to the port.

The CWC Warehouse Manager, Mr M. Thangavelu, was present when the containers were shipped from the CFS.
