Shipping MacAndrews expanding India operations Our Bureau
Kolkata , July 5 MACANDREWS, the UK subsidiary of the French shipping line CMA CGM, proposes to expand its operation in India such that its Indamex service, offering fixed weekly sailings between India and the East Coast of US (with one call at West Asia on the return leg), could cover more areas in this country. The purpose is to have an increased involvement in Indian trade. Ever since its emergence on the Indian market about a year ago, MacAndrews has been concentrating on cargoes moving through Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal of Jawaharlal Nehru port. It now proposes to additionally serve the shippers located in the southern region, particularly those now moving their cargoes through the ports of Chennai and Tuticorin. The southern States, it is felt, hold out the promise of significant growth. The Indamex has a port rotation of Colombo-NSICT-New York-Norfolk-Charleston-Port Said-Colombo. In all, seven vessels are deployed on the route, of which, "Indamex Colorado" belongs to MacAndrews. Shipping Corporation of India, which launched the Indamex service in 2000 in partnerships with Contship and CMA CGM, is no longer in the consortium. SCI withdrew from the service about a month ago, after its vessels deployed on the route were freed from charter on expiry of the charter hire. The shipping line failed to locate another vessel. APL was not in the Indamex consortium in the beginning; it joined much later. The existing partners of Indamex now propose to upgrade the service with higher capacity vessels, 4000-teus plus each, it is learnt. In addition to participating in the Indamex consortium about a year ago, MacAndrews, which is traditionally an intra-European regional container operator, also launched the Swahili Express between the Indian sub-continent, West Asia and East Africa towards the end of 2004.
