Telecommunications Mobile subscriber base up 2 m in June Our Bureau
New Delhi , July 8 MOBILE subscriber base crossed the 56 million mark with the addition of 2 million new users in the month of June. While the subscriber base of cellular operators using the GSM technology increased by 1.57 million new users, the CDMA network added 4.3 lakh mobile users in June. The total GSM user base in the country now stands at 44.9 million while the CDMA user base has gone up to 11.8 million. The current trend would not be sufficient to meet the target of 250 million phone connections by 2007 set by the Communications Ministry. Both the telecom regulator and the Ministry have set a target of 4 million new connections every month, which means a doubling of the current growth rate. According to fresh numbers released by the Cellular Operators Association of India, Bharti touched a subscriber base of 12.25 million adding 0.45 million new users capturing a share of 27.28 per cent of the GSM market. Reliance added 3.35 lakh users, and BSNL 3.5 lakh users in June. Hutch comes fourth with 2.5 lakh new users.
