NEW Mangalore Port registered a growth of 11.92 per cent in cargo handling during the first quarter of the current financial year.

A press release by the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) said the port handled 8.48 million tonnes of cargo between April and June, against 7.58 million tonnes handled during the corresponding period of the previous year.

It handled 2,216 TEUs (twenty-ft equivalent units) of container cargo during the first quarter as against 1,663 TEUs handled in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, registering a growth of 33.25 per cent.

New container cargoes such as wax candle, decorative vinyl, and assorted toys started moving through the port. Added to this, the port's container traffic got a shot in the arm with the Central Warehouse Corporation's (CWC) announcement of concessions to importers and exporters for utilising the container freight station in the port premises.

The release said the early completion of the Mangalore-Hassan railway line could help in bringing more container cargo to the port.

The port handled the highest number of 103 vessels and a record quantity of 7.74 lakh tonnes of iron ore fines during June. It handled 9.20 lakh tonnes of cargo manually during that month. The highest parcel of 51,500 tonnes of iron ore fines was loaded manually on M.V. Kang Chang on June 29, the release said.
