Monitoring panel for Sethusamudram project

THE Government has constituted a monitoring committee to assess the environmental impact of the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project and advise the project authorities.

It will consist of renowned marine biologists, microbiologists, experts in fisheries and agriculture.

Dr S. Kannaiyan, Chairman, National Bio-diversity Authority, Chennai, will be the Chairman of the committee.

Prof Dileep Biswas, former chairman, Central Pollution Control Board, and Mr S.C. Sharma, Additional Director-General (Wildlife) are among the members.

The committee will submit its reports to the project authorities and the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways on a monthly basis.

Besides the monitoring committee, the Ministry is also constituting a mechanism to monitor the physical and financial progress of the project on a regular basis at the level of the Secretary (Shipping).
