Officials recount Thrissur stories

C.J. Punnathara

Thrissur , July 10

IT was a time to unwind, recollect and savour stories of their old days in Thrissur for some top bureaucrats of the country.

"I landed at the Thrissur Railway Station burdened by a steel trunk, a bed roll and a tennis racquet over 30 years ago. When I departed after my stint as District Collector, I had acquired a wife, begot three children, and had accumulated household articles to fill more than a truck," recalled Mr Vinod Rai, Additional Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs (Banking Division) in the Government of India.

Mr Rai and Mr V. Leeladhar, Deputy Governor of RBI, were in the city for the platinum jubilee celebrations of the South Indian Bank. The people of Thrissur still fondly recall those early days when Mr Rai took the lead in developing and refurbishing the civic amenities and accelerating the pace of development of the town.

He was called the second Sakthan Thampuran, after the Maharaja of Cochin who introduced the Pooram festival to Thrissur and planned the development of the township.
