TN plans to upgrade roads

THE Tamil Nadu Government has decided to upgrade roads at a cost of Rs 920 crore under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme, according to an official press release.

This would cover more than 6,700 km of various categories of roads, which would be widened and upgraded under this programme.

The Government plans to spend Rs 300 crore to upgrade 1,420 km of State highways, Rs 300 crore to upgrade 1,676 km of major district roads, Rs 220 crore to improve 3,597 km of other district roads, and Rs 100 crore for Panchayat Union roads and Panchayat roads.

This project is a part of the Rs 1,050-crore Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme announced earlier for 2005-06 by the Government. In the last four years, over 33,156 km of roads have been upgraded, according to the release.
