AP yet to assess rain damage

THE State Revenue Minister, Mr Dharmana Prasada Rao, today said the State has not yet assessed the total damage caused by heavy rains over the last three days.

The Government is in the process of obtaining details from the districts affected and a comprehensive picture would be arrived at shortly, he told newspersons here. Nine districts in the State recorded rainfall ranging from 15 mm to 82.2 mm. They are Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medak, Warangal, Khammam, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Adilabad and Karimnagar.

Human loss was reported in five districts with a total toll of 14 including four minors. Reports reaching the State headquarters showed that 739 houses were fully damaged, while 1,850 houses were partly damaged in the five districts. With regard to irrigation, 40 water sources under the Panchayat Raj and 19 under Irrigation Board were damaged. The engineers of both the departments were currently attending to restoration of the tanks, the Minister said.

The Government has organised ten relief camps in the districts of Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy and Warangal, where 731 families were evacuated. Food, medicines and drinking water were provided to the families in the relief camps, Mr Rao said.

According to the Minister, a crop loss of approximately 720 acres in Adilabad district and 360 acres in Karimnagar district were reported so far. The detailed reports were currently being obtained from the Collectors of the affected districts, he said.
