New Delhi , July 13

THE Government will host the Flora Expo in September 2006 in New Delhi in an effort to boost floriculture exports in the country.

APEDA (Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) will sponsor the show and seek support from the Delhi State Government, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Government of India and the National Horticulture Board, said the Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (Apeda) Chairman, Mr K.S. Money, at a press meet here.

"We would also like to have support from regional local flower growers associations," he said adding that there was a proposal to invite Japan and the Netherlands as the partner country. The expo will be held during September 8-10.

Mr Money stressed the need to have a complete cold chain for India to emerge as a floriculture destination.

"Having set up six agri-export zones across five States - Tamil Nadu, Uttaranchal, Karnataka, Sikkim, Maharashtra - there is a need to put in place an integrated cold chain for perishables," he said.

Floriculture exports have grown from Rs 18.83 crore in 1993-94 to Rs 205.25 crore in 2004-05.

"We are in talks with various airports, ports and the Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) to have cold chambers in place at the point of exports," said Mr Money.

"We plan to put up a cold chamber at Bagdogra airport in the North-East," he said.

India has the advantage of good climatic condition and inexpensive labour, but infrastructure, maintaining quality standards, marketing and R&D are areas that need more attention.

During 2004-05, export of Apeda monitored agri-products was Rs 16,559 crore, against a target of Rs 16,213 crore.
