Current news is bait for malware worms

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore , July 17

CAN you imagine someone taking advantage of human tragedy to enjoy titbits of notoriety? Obviously this can come only from propagating malware successfully.

The trend though, is not new. It has happened in the past and the practice of utilising current events is as old as malware threats themselves.

But `spoofing legitimate news agencies', Trend Micro sources say, `is a relatively new practice that promises to become more prevalent in the near future'.

The latest one that is doing the rounds is TROJ_DONBOMB.A. While this uses the recent bombings in London as the basis for its social engineering, it is made to appear as if the recipient has received the e-mail from CNN, states a Trend Micro release.

The message body is said to be a modified HTML copy of the CNN Web page regarding the London bombings with an attachment that promises amateur video footage of the tragic event.
