Lupin launches anti-infective in US

Mumbai , July 21

THE Mumbai-based drug maker Lupin Ltd has launched the anti-infective Ceftriaxone vials for injections in the United States market, a day after the patent on the drug expired.

Ceftriaxone is the generic or chemical equivalent of Rocephin marketed by Roche and is estimated to have a $756 million market in the US. Lupin is one of the two pharma companies along with Sandoz who have an approval to sell the generic in the US market.

Lupin has also entered into an agreement with Baxter Healthcare Corporation, a global medical products company headquartered in the US. Baxter will exclusively distribute Lupin's generic version of Ceftriaxone vials in the US hospitals. Lupin has also entered into a separate agreement with Henry Schein Inc, a distributor, for the sale of this product to physician offices.

Earlier in October 2003, Lupin had received the ANDA approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) for 250 mg, 500 mg, 1g and 2g variants of Ceftriaxone vials for injection.

Lupin's Managing Director, Mr Kamal Sharma said that the drug would be manufactured at the company's Mandideep facility in Madhya Pradesh.

Meanwhile, Lupin became one of the six bidders shortlisted by a Polish government agency to buy a 47.5 per cent stake in drugmaker Jelfa.
