E-Commerce & E-Business `e-commerce growing at over 50 pc' Our Bureau

New Delhi , July 22 THE volume of e-commerce in India at present is Rs 570 crore with an annual growth rate of more than 50 per cent and is estimated at $10 billion in the next decade, according to Mr Rajeeva Ratna Shah, Member Secretary, Planning Commission. Mr Shah was delivering the keynote address at the e-Business Summit 2005 `Taking the Next Leap', organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here on Friday. If India were to touch the $10 billion mark, it would be imperative to address certain burning issues such as security of data transmission, privacy protection and transaction protection, and improve the legal infrastructure in the country. To look into these issues, he said, the Government had set up five working groups and had constituted an inter-ministerial working group. The Government had also established an Information Security Technology Development Council and also created a National Information Security Assurance Framework. Mr U. Srinivasa Raghavan, Member, Postal Service Board, said the Department of Post was geared to face the challenge of popularising e-commerce in the country. The department was quickly moving towards the Central Server Technology which would be in place by next year. He said the department was a key agent of developing and promoting e-business in the country. According to him, India Post has access to direct mail and an efficient delivery mechanism, which is the key to develop e-business in the country. The department was keen to cooperate in the mission to make India a big e-commerce nation. Earlier, Mr Ajit Balakrishnan, Chief Executive Officer, rediff.com, said that airline ticketing, railway ticketing, electronic gadgets and games would drive e-commerce in the years to come.
