Airlines Renovated Mumbai airport terminal to be commissioned tomorrow Our Bureau
Mumbai , July 26 THE Airports Authority of India is set to commission phase 1 of the modified domestic terminal 1B of the Chattrapati Shivaji Airport here on July 28. The terminal will house the operations of a number of private carriers including Jet Airways, Air Sahara, Spice Jet, and Air Deccan, and is expected to cater to 7 million passenger movements per annum. Phase 1 of the two-phase project consists of 1,575 sqm check-in area with 38 check-in counters and a security hold of 1,651 sqm. The one-time holding capacity of phase 1 is expected to be around 1,600 passengers. Once the airlines move into the renovated terminal, the Airports Authority will take up the second phase. The project cost of Phase 1 is Rs 35 crore and the entire project cost is pegged at Rs 83 crore. According to Mr Sudhir Kumar, AAI Director, post-renovation, the terminal building would be able to cope with passenger traffic growth projected at 20 per cent each year for the next three years. The new terminal building has been designed by Mr Hafeez Contractor and has been constructed by Unity. The modern façade of the new terminal building is made of aluminium composite panels. The new terminal has a pillarless check-in area 105-m-long and 23-m-wide. According to Mr Contractor, the first phase was a learning experience for his team and the second phase was likely to be completed on schedule in five months. He added that besides the improved passenger facilities, the terminal created an international ambience that would be appreciated by passengers. The terminal has ramps and other amenities for physically challenged customers.
