AP corpn to build waste treatment plant in Kochi

Our Bureau

Kochi , July 28

THE Kochi Corporation and the Andhra Pradesh Technology Development Corporation (ATDC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for setting up a solid waste treatment plant at nearby Brahmapuram.

The project, with a capacity to process 250-tonne solid wastes daily, has to be completed within one year from the date of handing over of the land.

The total project cost has been worked out to Rs 20 crore. The Corporation had selected the ATDC as the agency for the implementation of the project, as the firm quoted the lowest rate for setting up the plant.

The FACT Engineering Design Organisation (FEDO) cleared the tender and technical details submitted by the ATDC.

The task of supervision and certification of the work has been entrusted with FEDO.

The City Mayor, Mr Dinesh Mani said that the Corporation had entrusted the task of vetting the tender proposals with FEDO as it is an internationally recognised agency. Once the plant is set up, it would be able to process the solid waste generated by the entire district, he said.

Meanwhile, the foundation stone of the new Corporation office to be built at Marine Drive will be laid on August 6 by the Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy.

The Corporation council, which met on Monday, had cleared the Rs 12.70 crore proposal for the civil work related to the new office building. The civic body is planning to complete the new office complex at an expense of Rs 18.83 crore.

It had earmarked Rs one crore in the annual budget for 2005-06 and Rs 50 lakh from the plan fund. The council had also cleared the proposal to raise the required amount for the construction as loan from HUDCO.
