Chennai , July 28

THE last date for filing return of income for salaried and business class is August 1. There will be no extension beyond this date, according to Dr Binoy Gupta, Chief Commissioner of Income-Tax, and Chennai.

Since July 31 falls on a Sunday, the Income-Tax department has opened special counters for salaried class from July 28 to August 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are 30 counters for the general public, two for senior citizens and physically handicapped and two for people from Tambaram. These counters will function on Saturday and Sunday also, Dr Gupta said.

There are also help desks, PAN (permanent account number) validation counters and return receipts counters. The help desks will provide information on jurisdiction, answer general queries and also supply return forms.

Taxpayers have to quote the right PAN in their returns. Unit Trust of India (UTI) is operating a special counter to receive applications for PAN at the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Chennai.

He said two lakh returns from the salaried classes are expected this year. It is expected that a lakh of returns will be filed before the last date, he said.

Last year, income tax collected from Tamil Nadu was about Rs 8,300 crore. This year, it is expected to cross Rs 10,000 crore.

Chennai ranks fourth, after Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore for the highest amount of income-tax collected.
