Mumbai High: Govt begins operation to counter pollution

Our Bureau

New Delhi , July 28

CONSEQUENT to the fire incident in Mumbai High and in anticipation of oil pollution, a pollution response operation has begun today, according to the Ministry of Defence.

An aircraft is undertaking aerial dispersal of oil spill dispersants for neutralisation of oil slick, the Ministry said in a statement.

A Dornier aircraft of the Coast Guard took off from Daman this morning and reported a thin sheen of oil extending up to 10 nautical miles in easterly direction towards land, the statement added.

Mobilisation of pollution response resources is being co-ordinated by the Coast Guard along with ONGC, the Mumbai Port Trust, and other agencies, it said.

Three Coast Guard ships equipped with pollution response equipment and oil spill dispersants have reached the area to contain the oil spill.

The Bombay High North (BHN) platform has gone down completely.

No damage has been sustained at the other three platforms adjacent to the BHN probably due to the activation of the BHN platform's automatic shut-off system.

Coast Guard ship, Vijaya, is in the area and carrying out search and rescue operations.
