Internet `Root server to decongest traffic on Net' Our Bureau
Coimbatore , Aug. 7 CHENNAI has emerged as the first centre in the country to get the `root server'. Two more root servers at Noida and Mumbai would become operational from August 25, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, said. Making this announcement at the inauguration of the STPI - IT Park at the Kumaraguru College of Technology, Mr Maran said the facility went into action on August 5. Explaining the utility value of the root server, he said the facility would help in decongesting the traffic flow over the Internet. The root server, he pointed out would go into action at times of disaster or when there is congestion in traffic flow over the Net. `Root server tries to resolve addresses on the Net. For instance, if you are trying to log on to the Kumaraguru website, the root server will try and reach the fastest track to get this address. Earlier, it used to take 500 milliseconds to get the address. With the new root server, it would be possible to get it in 5 milliseconds,' he said. While most other countries had two root servers India would have three, Mr Maran said in reply to a question on how many would be needed for the kind of traffic on the Net at present.
