Infrastructure Focus must be on high-end jobs in software: Maran Our Bureau
Coimbatore , Aug. 7 THE Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, has stressed the need for educating youngsters to focus on high-end jobs in software to meet the challenges over the next decade. Voicing concern about the present trend of servicing low-end jobs in software, the Minister, who was speaking at the inauguration of the STPI-IT Park at Kumaraguru College of Technology noted that the onsite and near-shore projects were picking up, but feared that the situation could go out of hand if the country did not gear up to face the challenge of servicing high-tech jobs. In this context, he said the STPI partnered with Software Quality Institute to inculcate quality software processes. The Institute is planning to train 50,000 students by 2008 at its facility in Chennai. Besides the training, the Government should also help in allocating space at concessional rates for development of IT corridors, he said. While hailing the STPI's efforts, he called upon the top executives of STPI to start looking at other towns like Madurai, Tiruchi and Thanjavur. The STPI Director-General, Mr S.N. Zindal, said the STPI proposed to provide low cost web hosting services to SMEs besides offering free email service to corporates and individuals under India.in domain (with facility to send and receive e-mail in Indian languages). STPI also has plans to provide data centre facility at internationally competitive rates, he said. Delivering the keynote address, theCEO and President of Cognizant Technology Solutions, Mr Lakshmi Narayanan, said most global set ups were keen to create a back-up facility and Cognizant was no exception. `We are sitting on a great potential in terms of setting up a good manufacturing facility,' he said and added that the country would see greater growth, huge opportunity and potential to grow in the coming years.
