Software Cognizant opens development centre in Coimbatore Our Bureau
Coimbatore , Aug. 7 COGNIZANT Technology Solutions has taken the lead among the mega IT service providers in setting up its development centre at Coimbatore. Dr N. Mahalingam, Chairman, Sakthi Group of Companies, formally inaugurated the 40,000 sq ft Cognizant Development Centre at the STPI (Software Technology Parks of India) promoted IT park at the Kumaraguru College of Technology on Saturday. Later talking to presspersons, Mr Lakshmi Narayanan, President and CEO of Cognizant, said the company had, within two months of taking a decision on establishing its presence here, commenced operations. Stating that the Coimbatore centre was the first of its kind facility in a tier II city, he said the intent was in leveraging the rich talent pool of technical professionals in the region. He was confident that the Coimbatore centre would strengthen Cognizant's relationship with the academia. The company has commenced operations with a core team of 50 senior professionals from within Cognizant. It is looking at taking this number to 400 in the first year of operation. "As we grow, we intend to enhance this capacity to accommodate 800-1,200 people, say within the next 12-18 months," its Managing Director, Mr R. Chandrasekaran, said. During the incubation stage, the centre would focus on specific high value work in the enterprise space apart from looking into testing services and infrastructure management services. To a query on investment, Mr. Lakshmi Narayanan said the company had drawn a roadmap for investing Rs 200 crore in the country up to December 2005. "Some of this will be invested in this centre. We have spent a few crores till now, but the major spend will be only in the next phase," he said, when asked to specify the investment in the Coimbatore centre.
