AP to receive German funding for megacity

Hyderabad , Aug. 8

THE State capital of Andhra Pradesh has received a shot in the arm with the German Government identifying it for funding under the megacity project.

A joint workshop was held here on Sunday, kicking off the preparatory phase. Making a presentation on `Hyderabad as a Megacity of tomorrow; Sustainable urban food and health security and environmental resource management', Prof Konrad Hagedom, Chairman of Consortium of Indo-German Project, said a Perspective Action Plan (PAP) for the city would be prepared after developing a sustainable development framework (SDF).

This plan would focus on core issues of food, nutrition, health and environment.

The first two years would be for concept design followed by nine years of implementation.

One of the important objectives was to come up with a sustainable urban food and health system to meet nutritional and health demands of the growing population.

The project would also involve government organs such as the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad and trade bodies such as the Confederation of Indian Industry.

Non-governmental organisations too would be roped in.

"The project envisages capacity building for stakeholders to make them participate in PAP implementation through their own institutions," he said. These capacities would be built and tested in pilot projects.

The roadmap included formation of project management committee, review of implemented programmes, formulation of pilots and national and international workshops.

Addressing the inaugural, Mr Koneru Ranga Rao, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Municipal Administration, said the city's population was growing at 27.37 per cent every decade.

In 2001, the population stood at 55.3 lakh.

He said there would be shift in overall strategies and priorities of development as the survey estimated that nearly 50 per cent of the world population would live in urban areas in the next 20 years.
