Marketing Agri co-op society plans to market arecanut in Gujarat Our Bureau
Mangalore , Aug. 9 THE Mangalore-based South Kanara Agriculturists' Cooperative Marketing Society (SKACMS) Ltd is planning to market arecanut in Gujarat from next year. Now, the operations of the society are limited to Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu districts of Karnataka. Addressing newspersons here on Tuesday, the President of the Society, Mr S.R. Satishchandra, said the society would either open sales outlets or appoint agents in Gujarat in February 2006, to market arecanut. A delegation of the society members recently visited major arecanut markets such as Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Surat in Gujarat to study the market. He said Gujarati customers prefer arecanut from Dakshina Kannada district because of its quality. The Mangalore Agriculturists' Souharda Sahakari (MASS) Ltd and the Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd have their sales outlets in Gujarat. Asked about the current trend in arecanut market, he said better days are ahead for growers in the region. He said good rainfall in Gujarat - the major market for white variety of arecanut - would improve the economic condition of people there. This would, in turn, help improve arecanut trade in the domestic market. SKACMS - which has branches in Mangalore, Puttur and Sullia in Dakshina Kannada district and Kundapur in Udupi district - procures arecanut from growers in its branches. Mr Satishchandra said SKACMS would open one more branch at Vittal in Dakshina Kannada in October. The society has decided to keep open its Puttur branch throughout the year. With this, the society would like to provide better service to arecanut growers in Puttur, which is a major arecanut growing area, he said. Apart from arecanut, SKACMS is also planning to sell various other agricultural commodities in the Gujarat market, he added.
