Not smooth as silk

K.K. Mustafah

A farmer tending to silkworms on his sericulture farm in Kerala's Thrissur district. Though India is second in silk production in the world and the largest silk consumer, the growers are facing problems. Their woes mainly arise from increasing silk imports from China. Silk imports, comprising raw silk, silk yarn and fabrics, totalled Rs 1,335.99 crore during the 2004-05 fiscal, up from Rs 1,180.49 crore the previous year. On the other hand, total silk exports declined to Rs 2,747.68 crore from Rs 2,779.19 crore the previous year.
