Corporate Disputes Info-Tech - Telecommunications Tata Tele petitions TDSAT against Reliance over inter-connection Our Bureau
New Delhi , Aug. 10 TATA Teleservices has filed a petition with the Telecom Dispute Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) against Reliance Infocomm for allegedly not giving interconnection in 12 circles. Tata Teleservices claimed that calls being made from a Reliance phone could not land on a Tata Indicom phone due to lack of interconnection. On the other hand, calls made by Tata Indicom subscribers to Reliance phones are being routed through Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd's network for which the company has to pay an additional 19 paise per call as carriage charges to BSNL. "We are routing through BSNL because we do not have direct connectivity with Reliance, while BSNL has interconnection with us and Reliance as well. This is illegal since the licence norms states that interconnection is mandatory with all operators," said a Tata official. Tata Teleservices claimed that services have been disrupted in circles, which were acquired recently by the company. Tatas have started mobile and fixed wireless telephone services in new circles including Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (East and West), Bihar, Orissa, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Kolkata. Recently, a directive from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had asked all service providers to provide interconnections within 90 days of payments being made by the seeking company. However, due to a recent court order, TRAI does not have the powers to intervene in disputes relating to interconnection.
