Telecommunications More BSNL mobile switches at Madurai and Coimbatore Our Correspondent
MADURAI: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has commissioned two new mobile switches at Madurai and Coimbatore, raising its capacity to offer seven lakh more new mobile connections to subscribers in the Tamil Nadu Circle. With the third mobile switch at Vellore to be added soon, BSNL will be the No.1 operator in the mobile phone sector in terms of equipped capacity in the circle, able to offer one lakh more new connections, according to the Madurai BSNL General Manager, Mr M.K. Sudarsanam. Speaking to presspersons here, he said that BSNL proposed to cover 456 new towns and 16 rail routes in the roll out. Madurai, Theni and Dindigul will get four lakh connections with an additional 101 towers. He further said that, the new customers are offered the `right to choose' their numbers for post-paid service. The existing customers would be offered this service later. Steps are being taken to decongest traffic by increasing the capacity of individual towers with adoption of three different frequencies.Under the Rs 145-monthly rental scheme for the landline, 1,300 new customers have been added. The land line working connections stood at 2.45 lakh against its equipped capacity of 3.32 lakh lines, he added.
