The Hindu Business Line : Monsoon stays vigorous in East

THE South-West monsoon continued to be vigorous in the East as was evident from the fairly widespread rainfall with scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall recorded in Assam, east Uttar Pradesh, north of Bihar (Nepal), and Chhattisgarh during the last 24 hours.

Some of the significant rainfall episodes reported during the period were (in cm): Guwahati - 13.6; Silchar - 12.2; Sundergarh - 10.5; Allahabad - 7.2; Jharsuguda - 7.1; Cooch Behar - 4.5; Puri - 4.1, and Tezpur - 3.7.

On Friday, the western end of the axis of the monsoon trough did not shift much from the previous day's roost close to the foothills of the Himalayas. The eastern end passed through Lucknow, Gaya, Dhanbad, Balasore, and thence South-Eastwards into East-Central Bay of Bengal.

According to predictions by the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), the present alignment of the trough will help enhance rainfall activity further over the East and even in parts of Central India over the next 4-5 days.

Thursday's upper air cyclonic circulation over South-East Uttar Pradesh had curled over to North-east Uttar Pradesh and extended up to 0.9 km above sea level.

In its forecast for the next five days, the NCMRWF said that scattered to fairly widespread rains are expected to continue over Uttaranchal during the next 24 hours but will decrease thereafter. The rest of the areas in the North/North-West region are likely to receive isolated rains during next 3-4 days.

In the East, fairly widespread rains are expected over east Uttar Pradesh, northern Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, and Orissa during the next three days.

In Central India, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh are likely to receive fairly widespread rains with isolated heavy rainfall during the next three days. Vidarbha may receive scattered to fairly widespread rainfall during this period.

Most parts of South India are likely to receive fairly widespread rains during the next three days except over Tamil Nadu, where isolated rains are expected during the period.

Towards the West, scattered to fairly widespread rains are expected over Konkan and Goa, Maharashtra, and south Gujarat. The rest of the areas are likely to experience isolated rainfall activity during the period.
