AP Govt to step up efforts to boost rural economy

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Aug. 25

THE Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said that the Government has stepped up efforts to improve the rural economy and bring in rural transformation within two years.

Speaking after releasing the book `Rural Transformation in India — The Impact of Globalisation', the Chief Minister said even with small holdings of one acre, agriculture could be made viable if water is made available to the small and marginal farmers. This needs to be supported by steps for using organic manure and improving the quality and productivity.

The book is a compilation of articles contributed by several academicians, economists and researchers and edited by Dr A. Vinayak Reddy and Dr G. Bhasker of Department of Economics, Kakatiya University, Warangal.

He lamented that the agricultural sector has been neglected in the past and its overall contribution to rural economy has come down to 13 per cent from 25 per cent in the last five years, while 66 per cent of the population is dependent on this.
