Bangalore , Aug. 25 THE National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) has tied up with the National Securities Depository Ltd (NSDL) for creating and maintaining a national registry of IT and BPO employees. Mr Kiran Karnik, President, Nasscom, said on Thursday that the registry would be rolled out on a pilot basis over the next two to three months. The proposed registry, a sort of an employee reference check, would contain the basic background details of employee such as the educational qualification and previous employment details, among others. The registry will be operated on a shared services model and administered by a credible third party such as the NSDL, Mr Karnik said, adding, "It would respect the individual's right for privacy and confidentiality". Initially, BPO employees would be covered in the registry followed by those in IT services space, he added. Replying to a query, Mr Karnik maintained that Nasscom was "reasonably confident" of achieving the targeted 30-32 per cent growth in IT and ITES exports for the current fiscal over last year's $17.2 billion. The first quarter results of IT firms were comfortable and reasonably good, he added. Referring to the recent reports on data theft from some BPO units, Mr Karnik said that no company or individual had filed an official complaint in that regard. However, investigations were on, he added. Mr Karnik said Nasscom had suggested amendments to the existing Information Technology Act in areas of data protection, responsibility of intermediaries and enforcement. The expert group had finalised its recommendations, and the IT Act would be hopefully amended after incorporating the recommendations in the next six to eight months, Mr Karnik said.
Quality certification for development processes
Microsoft Corporation India Pvt Ltd., along with Nasscom, announced on Thursday the launch of a certification to assess the quality of the software development processes undertaken by independent software vendors (ISVs) in India. The certification seeks to improve the credibility for Indian software products and help them in building a robust local software eco-system, a joint press release said. The certification has been developed on the Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF) and would enable ISVs to align themselves to the product development requirements as per the SEI CMMI Level 3 certification, the release said. "This certification will help Indian ISVs adopt internationally accepted standards for engineering and development, and ensure that their products are on a par with globally successful offerings, thus allowing them access to both the domestic and international markets," the release said. Software process consulting organisation QAI has been chosen as the implementation partner for this initiative.
