NOVELL Inc said today that it was acquiring 50 per cent stake held by its partner in the joint venture Onward Novell, its sales and distribution arm in India.

Novell expects to close the transaction by the end of current fiscal.

Ms Rhonda O'Donnell President, Novell Asia Pacific, said the move reflected the company's strong commitment to bringing its Linux and identity solutions to serve its Indian customers, while simultaneously enhancing its existing development and technical support operations in the region.

"Open source is the future of computing in much of the Asia-Pacific region, and Linux is emerging as the de facto standards-based operating platform. By increasing our investment in India, we are well positioned to help drive Linux and open-source adoption not just in India, but in other emerging Asian markets as well," Ms O'Donnell said.

Novell was evaluating a number of opportunities to promote Linux in India, Ms O'Donnell said, adding the company was focussing on segments such as banking, finance, government and BPO to promote its products.

Novell has a development centre in Bangalore, which has some 325 employees. The company plans to leverage its Bangalore centre for promoting the existing products and the development of future products, said Mr J. Veeraraghavan, Managing Director, Novell India.

The company was also keen on customising some of its global products for the Indian market.

"We view the Indian market as a huge growth market and the need of the hour is to develop solutions and support system for this local market," Mr Veeraraghavan said.
