Hyderabad , Aug. 26

LG Electronics India, which has set up a plant in Pune, plans to make the Indian facility its export hub and expects 50 per cent of its overall production would be for overseas markets.

The Product Group Head, GSM Mobiles, LG Electronics India, Mr H.S. Bhatia, said that the Indian market had emerged as one of the fastest growing market for mobile phones. In 10 years of GSM operations, it has 46 million phones. This market is set to expand further rapidly and the projections indicate that the market could possibly grow to about 200 million by 2010. Of this, LG expects to garner a 10 per cent share.

Addressing a press conference here today to announce the launch of yet another feature-rich stereophonic LG GSM handset, which is bundled with a pair of external speakers with a built-in amplifier, Mr Bhatia said trends indicated that black and white mobile handsets, like television sets some time ago, were on their way out.

With the cost of colour handsets sliding and affordability going up, the market for these handsets is gradually increasing. With convergence being the buzz word, all such phones are coming bundled with more features, such as MP3 players, cameras built into them, making it a single infotainment gadget.

The newly launched G1800 GSM handsetcomes with MP3 playback and stereophonic head set kit. The phone features 262,000 colour LCD screen display for bright and sharp visuals.

LG has invested about $35 million in its manufacturing plant in India and another $5 million in R&D. The manufacturing plant based in Pune has begun production
