Co-operatives Orissa House panel lauds Visakha co-op dairy Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Sept. 2 VISAKHA Co-operative Dairy is doing great service to the dairy farmers in the districts of Visakhapatnam, Vizinagaram, Srikakulam and East Godavari and its methods are worthy of emulation by other dairy co-operatives in Andhra Pradesh as well as Orissa, said Mr Umesh Chandra Swain, Chairman of the Orissa State Legislative House Committee on co-operatives. The House committee visited the Visakha co-operative dairy and various institutions run by it on Thursday and later interacted with the press. Mr Swain said the methods adopted by the Visakha Dairy should be replicated elsewhere in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. "In paying a fair price to the farmers and looking after their welfare, this dairy stands out. It is one of the finest co-operatives in the country on a par with Amul,'' he said. He said all the primary co-operatives under the dairy were being managed by elected representatives and they were all running on profits. There was a joint accounting system in bank operations with the president of the society and the supervisor of the dairy to avoid misappropriation. There were checks and balances in the system and there was transparency, he added. The dairy has set up a modern hospital, providing quality medicare at affordable rates, for farmers. It also manages colleges and schools that are providing quality education, he said. "Nowhere else in the country have we seen a dairy looking after the farmers so well," he said. The praise showered by the Orissa House Committee assumes significance in the light of the fact that the Andhra Pradesh Government instituted a probe by the AP House Committee into the alleged irregularities in the dairy.
