Saving the mangroves

We fully support the suggestions of the environmental NGO — Bombay Environmental Action Group — to the Bombay High Court in its petition on mangroves seeking directives declaring them areas of `protected forests', which will prohibit any development activity within a range of 50 meters of any mangrove.

Also appreciated are similar attempts to fence off mangrove tracts to avoid encroachments, and eviction of encroachers from mangrove land, re-plantation of destroyed mangroves, removal of artificial bunds and garbage dumps that choke the mangroves and the appointment of senior upright officers to monitor the implementation of the same.
