Kochi , Sept. 6

THE unreserved ticketing system (UTS) introduced by the Southern Railway has started functioning at Guruvayur and Alwaye. This is the first of its kind ticketing machines introduced in Thiruvananthapuram division by replacing the previous SMARTS system.

Railways' endeavour to make purchase of unreserved tickets as hassle free as possible led to the introduction of the microprocessor based SMARTS system at major stations. With this, the concept of `any station, any class, any counter' now became a reality.

A press statement issued from Southern Railway said that now in advancement to SMARTS, the UTS would shortly be introduced in major stations of the Division. The new system offers many additional advantages to customers such as any station to any station ticketing; issue of unreserved return journey tickets; issue of unreserved tickets three days in advance; reduced queue length etc.

The system also allows Railways to plan extra trains and coaches as per trend of sales registered in the system and also possible for unreserved itinerary planning.

The facility would be introduced at Thiruvananthapuram Central, Kollam, Chengannur, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam Junction and Town, Thrissur, Kayamkulam, Nagercoil, Chnganachery, Angamali, Mavelikkara and Thiruvalla in a phased manner.
