ONGC-MRPL in talks for opening retail outlets

Pratim Ranjan Bose

Kolkata , Sept. 6

THE ONGC-MRPL combine is negotiating with a retail major for opening outlets at its petrol pumps across the country. The group has entered into a tie-up with Gulf Oil for marketing the latter's lubricants and car-care products at all outlets.

After its pilot OvaL RelaxTop outlet in Mangalore that was rolled out in March this year, the company plans to open two more outlets shortly. Altogether, the ONGC-MRPL combine will open 15-20 outlets during this year.

Company sources said the group had identified over 80 locations mostly in South India for acquisition from either the State Governments or State Government agencies. Deals had been finalised for about 20 locations mostly in highways or smaller cities.

ONGC has targeted major cities including Bangalore and Hyderabad for opening outlets.

Explaining the delay in expanding the network, the sources said that as an industry practice, the group had revised the design of its outlets based on feedback received after opening the pilot outlet. The group is currently busy in finalising the design and brand for MRPL outlets.
