Pune , Sept. 16

PHILIPS Electronics India Ltd has launched the Philips Brilliance CT scanner, the first of its kind in Pune.

The Brilliance CT scanner provides a 40-mm coverage of the heart in each rotation in 0.4 seconds, said Dr Anjan Bose, Director and Head of Philips Medical Systems in India.

Dr Bose told Business Line that Philips Medical System has an installed base of about 11 equipment across the country. He said the company was looking at installing about 15 across the country. The equipment cost is about Rs 5 crore.

Dr Bose said the company would import the machine and that the Indian team would be able to give customer support.

Commenting on the need for this kind of equipment, he said recent national health reports had confirmed that the disease pattern in the country was moving from infectious to style-based diseases (source CII-McKinsey study).

One of the major life-style based diseases is the coronary artery disease, also known as CAD, which leads to heart attacks. "With this getting more and more prevalent among the younger generation, there is a genuine need to detect the disease in its early stages so that the patient can take preventive action," said Dr Bose.

He said although CT scanners had been popular for many years, use of the same for cardiac imaging has been constrained by the absence of a fast enough scanner capable of scanning the moving heart at high speed and resolution. Designed for better clinical performance, the CT scanner provides large volume, thin slice coverage, image quality and productivity.
