PHILIPS Electronics India Ltd (PEIL) has unveiled a new medical technology in the form of the `Philips Brilliance Ultra-fast Cardiac CT Scanner' that the company says will enhance radiologists' ability to provide advanced patient care in the area of coronary artery disease. Addressing presspersons at the Kamineni Wockhardt Hospital here on Friday, the Philips Medical Systems Director and Head, Mr Anjan Bose, said the most advanced cardiac CT Scanner being installed for the first time in the South would provide best coverage of coronary arteries needed to complete a study in the shortest possible time.

Coronary artery disease was becoming more prevalent among the younger generation owing to lifestyle, he said. Detecting the disease in its early stages would enable preventive action. "Cardiac CT is emerging as one of the most popular non-invasive examinations for cardiac diseases. Its popularity is not only due to the safety aspects, but also because it needs no hospitalisation and no surgical facilities," Mr Bose said.

The new scanner makes the visualisation of the coronary arteries crisp with the finest details that would enable the physician to diagnose the problem with a high degree of confidence. According to Mr Bose, the scanner is convenient to use and allows the doctor to perform tests on patients whose heart rates were either very high or varying, or on patients whose heart rhythm has irregular beats.

In addition to cardiac studies, the speed and coverage enables the machine to perform very advanced imaging of the lungs, brain and colon, all carried out in a matter of a few seconds with the highest details hitherto not seen in CT imaging, Mr Bose said.
