PROF. B.R. Virmani, Chairman of CORD-M, has called for local and regional-level studies to identify the real requirement for technical human resources by the industry.
Delivering the keynote address at a daylong seminar on `Upgradation of vocational training system in India' here on Monday, he said the Government conducted macro studies at the national level. But this was of no use in identifying specific needs of a region and often resulted in surplus or shortage of skilled hands.
The seminar was organised by the Federation of AP Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. Studies onlocal needs can give a realistic picture, he said.
Mr H. Somasundaram, Regional Director of Apprentice Training, regretted that Industrial Training Institutes didn't often get the same importance as the IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) and the IIMs (Indian Institute of Management).
