The Hindu Business Line : `Knowledge management' for engineers advocated

IT is imperative for engineers to learn entrepreneurship, project management, finance, economics, and the basics of creating and managing teams, the Executive Director of BHEL, Tiruchi Complex, V. Gopalakrishnan, has said.

Launching the BL Club for MBA students of the National Institute of Technology here on Monday, Dr. Gopalakrishnan, in his presentation on `Engineers and Managers' observed that after a few years into the profession e0ngineers become managers of projects and even of companies, adding that one-third of all CEOs of Fortune-500 companies in the US comprise engineering graduates.

The opportunity to shape work environment is an exciting task for a real manager. A course on management, he said, prepares the learners to face the ever-changing economic scenario with more confidence.

Future development through unleashing new competencies could take place only if there is an initiative for intense interaction between professionals, peers from industry and academia. Knowledge management is the latest in the Internet era. On the profile of tomorrow's engineer-managers, he said, they have to be more flexible, inter-disciplinary-shaped and innovation oriented, to adapt to the constant developments.

"Our aim should be to become a recycling oriented society that conserves natural resources to the possible ultimate limit. Change being the only permanent thing in life, a willingness to accept change is a pre-requisite for progress," Dr. Gopalakrishnan added.

The Head of the Department of Management Studies, NIT, M. Puniamoorthy, said the BL Club would be a forum for interaction between students and industry representatives. Students would also be required to undertake studies and research on Government schemes such as rural employment guarantee scheme, under the aegis of the club.
