Letters Tackling economic fault lines
The "shocking disparities across regions" seen in the UN Human Development Report 2005 (Business Line, September 19) should spur backward countries to do better. And in India's case remaining at 127 out of 177 countries is deplorable. If Sri Lanka is at 93, their literacy rate is far higher than ours. As there are disparities across regions, the shocking regional disparities in India also need to be addressed and solved. The `One India' concept needs to be developed and encouraged in free flow of goods as well as education and health care. In this context, the suggestion made by the article `Vision 2020 The economic fault lines' (Business Line, September 19) to give an extra grant, of what the legislator gets under MPLAD to the opponent who gets the highest vote so as to introduce an element of competition for development is worth consideration. A. Jacob Sahayam Thiruvanantahapuram *** This refers to the article Vision 2020 The Economic fault lines (Business Line, September 19), which is interesting and thought-provoking. For politicians every disaster or calamity is an opportunity to make money. The benefits resulting from relief efforts rarely reach the afflicted masses.
Corrupt politicians can never be eliminated but their damage to the public can be mitigated by adopting strategies such as introducing competition among politicians as suggested by the article. Competition benefits the common man. Why not introduce it in politics as well? H. K. Lakshman Rao Chennai Letters to the editor and contributions can be sent by e-mail to: bleditor@thehindu.co.in
