Plantations Centre promises 5% export subsidy for arecanut Our Bureau
Puttur , Sept. 20 THE Union Government has promised 5 per cent export subsidy for arecanut, according to the Mangalore MP, Mr Sadananda Gowda. Presiding over a function to mark the release of three new products of the Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative (Campco) Ltd here on Tuesday, he said that a delegation of Karnataka MPs had met the Union Commerce Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, in New Delhi recently to apprise him of the situation facing arecanut growers in the State. The government's assurance will help Campco in its efforts to market arecanut in Pakistan. The Campco Director and Bantwal MLA, Mr Nagaraja Shetty, told Business Line that Campco planned to open a branch in Pakistan to market arecanut and chocolate products. The Campco President, Mr L.N. Kudoor, and Mr Shetty had recently visited Pakistan in this regard. Mr Gowda said the Union Commerce Ministry had promised to consider favourably the delegation's request for a ban on `cheap quality' arecanut. Although the State Government had promised to release Rs 10 crore under the market intervention scheme (MIS), it had so far released only Rs 4 crore, he said. The Government has fixed Rs 60 as production cost for a kg of arecanut under the MIS. He urged Campco to take the lead in pressurising the Government to increase the production cost of arecanut and cocoa under MIS. Stating that MIS would provide temporary respite to farmers, he asked the Government to come out with permanent plans for price stabilisation.
