Kamal Nath fails to turn up at Upasi meet

L.N. Revathy

Coonoor , Sept. 20

THE Union Commerce Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, has disappointed the apex body of plantations in the South - Upasi once again, by not turning up at its 112th Annual Conference.

The members, who had assembled well in advance for the meeting slated in the morning, waited patiently for over an hour, hoping that the Minister would somehow make it to the venue. They were later told that the Union Minister of State for Industry and Commerce, Mr E.V.K.S. Elangovan, would inaugurate the Conference as Mr Kamal Nath's copter could not land in Udhagamandalam due to weather conditions.

But there was bedlam at the Tea Trade Association of Coonoor, where the small grower community had assembled in large numbers to meet the Minister. They were hoping that the Commerce Minister would hear their plea and announce a better price for the green leaf.

Mr Kamal Nath was scheduled to meet the small growers prior to the Upasi programme. When reporters asked Mr Elangovan if he proposed to meet the small growers, he said he was not informed of any such meeting.
