HP plans to expand vendor network to tap telecom sector

V. Rishi Kumar

The focus has shifted to value-added services that can bring better return on technology investments telecom companies make.

Hyderabad , Sept 23

HEWLETT-Packard, the global technology major, sees Indian developers gradually playing a significant role in the global telecom landscape.

The WorldWide Director, Sales, Hewlett-Packard Company, Mr Barry Hill, said, "As an IT company which is at the core of telecom networks across the globe, we partner majority of Indian telecom operators in one form or the other and expect to rapidly expand the role we would like to play here through strategic alliance partners."

HP is looking to expand the number of ISVs (independent solution vendors) in the region and particularly India.

Mr Hill, who is on a visit to India, told Business Line that the Indian telecom market is rapidly expanding and the focus is no longer on merely acquiring customers.

Three years ago, all the investments were in telecom infrastructure expansion and network penetration.

A year ago, the issue was to provide a range of value added services (VAS).

Now with pressure mounting to improve ARPUs (average revenue per user), the focus has shifted to value added services that can bring better return on technology investments telecom companies make.

This could be in the form of adding voice-driven services and help bring in convergence, he explained.

"Consequently, we are in the process of expanding our partners in the region. Apart from the US and Europe, Asia Pacific has emerged as a big market, showing exponential growth.

For instance, South Korea too has shown a lot of innovation in the sector," Mr Hill said.

The company's OpenCall suite facilitates operations and billing for the telecommunications industry.

This serves as a base to launch a series of other services. We are probably the only company that provides end-to-end telecom services, he said.

HP OpenCall delivers solutions and business partnerships that bring the agility and value of IT to service delivery, while meeting expectations that service providers demand.

Mr Hill and his team were on a visit to Xius facility in Hyderabad headed by its Managing Director, Mr G.V. Kumar. Xius has emerged as one of the successful ISVs implementing HP OpenCall globally.
