Infrastructure Italian cos to be `active' in airport modernisation Our Bureau
New Delhi , Sept. 23 ITALIAN companies will be "active" during the second phase of airport modernisation process in India, the Italian Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Pietro Lunardi, said in a conference. "We have identified areas of cooperation in road transport, railways and the port sector as well," he said. The Minister met senior Indian Railway officials on Thursday. "Italian Railways have opened up a technical window for high capacity and high velocity trains. Italian engineering firms would be invited to participate in metro railway systems in Delhi as well. Indian Railways is looking for a signalling and controlling system where we could be of help. We are also willing to provide rolling stocks," he said. He added that a bilateral agreement would be defined for cooperation. The Italian national road authority, ANAS, also met with the National Highways Authority of India. "We are particularly interested in sharing technical know-how on road safety with the NHAI and have invited an Indian delegation to a conference on road safety," the Minister said. ANAS will submit a proposal on the areas where it can provide support. Then, there would be a follow-up on specific segments in which the Indian road sector is interested. He said that Italy is looking for flagship projects to invest in India, but declined to give any details. "We see ourselves as possible partners for the sea link project in Mumbai," he said, adding that it would depend on the economic feasibility. "In the second phase of airport modernisation, our companies will be active."
