THE Retailers Association of India (RAI) has raised the banner of protest against the blanket ban on plastic bags proposed by the State Government.
According to RAI, the recent calamity has more to do with faulty waste management than use of plastic bags. Strict enforcement of the ban on the use of plastic bags below 20 microns would solve the issue, the association said. Roughly one million plastic bags are used every day in Maharashtra.
Mr Gibson G. Vedamani, CEO, RAI, said, "Less than five per cent of the plastic bags are used by organised retailers, and these are of more than 30 microns, which are recyclable. The remaining 95 per cent is used by small vendors and is less than 20 microns. Hence a strict ban on plastic bags of less than 20 microns would solve the issue."
RAI has submitted a white paper to the Maharashtra Government in which it has said how people trust cleanliness and safety of the products packed in plastic bags. It contends, without plastic, this trust will be adversely affected, as it is difficult to ensure hygiene and prevent adulteration in food products.
It has, however, given an assurance on behalf of the organised retailing community to make efforts to control the use of plastic in a phased manner. RAI encourages and supports retailers to become modern and adopt best practices.
