Small onion prices likely to be unchanged

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , Oct. 4

THE price of the small onion is expected to remain unchanged in Tamil Nadu. It is at present hovering around Rs 10 a kg.

Good crop prospects and continuous supply to the various markets are a clear pointer to the rate movement, trade sources say.

Taking cue from the situation, the Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC) at the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies has advised farmers to release their stocks. A survey conducted by DEMIC has confirmed that the area under early kharif crop almost doubled to 3,300 hectares, and the excess supply is expected to offset the anticipated rise in price levels.

Market sources expect the total production to be 37,500 tonnes (this season) from Coimbatore and Tirunelveli regions. The area covered in these two regions has been estimated at 3,300 hectares. Besides this, the podisu onion variety is cultivated in an area of about 10,000 hectares and the production is expected to touch one lakh tonnes.

Market sources are planning to store 50 per cent of the podisu onion till November-end.

Meanwhile, the weekly arrival of the small onion at the mandis in Tamil Nadu has been put at 10,000 bags (of 75 kgs).
