Infrastructure `Holistic view vital for airport development' Our Bureau
Mumbai , Oct. 7 A HOLISTIC view of infrastructure development and not the narrow theme of public or private ownership was core to the issue of airport development, Mr Nilotpal Basu, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, has said. According to him, the development of airport infrastructure should include a holistic view of any project. For instance, efforts should include plans for mass transportation systems that can move passengers to and from an airport. Mr Basu, who is also the Head of the CPI (M) in the Upper House of Parliament, cited the example of the Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok airports that have light rail systems linking the airport to the city centre. Mr Basu was addressing a seminar on low-cost airlines organised by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA). He said these were among the important issues related to the upgradation, as opposed to the general view that ownership whether public or private, lay at the core. Airport upgradation: With regard to the Government's plans to upgrade the Mumbai and Delhi airports, the committee has questioned the space constraints that rule out the development of a second runway at Mumbai airport with associated limitations on benefits possible from technical improvements. It has also inquired into projections that the current airport capacity would be exhausted by 2012.
